Just an FYI, it looks like the user community for X-Plane is beginning to make some moves in the area of scenery modification.

+1 on gateway...
The gateway scenery rolls into the next release of X-Plane and you can see if a particular airport update is already included in your X-Plane version. If it isn't just download it and put it in the custom scenery directory, if it is then you don't need to download anything
I go through my custom scenery directory from time to time and remove airports that are already in the current X-Plane version I'm flying. Although I haven't had any conflict issues.
